DETROIT RENAISSANCE vs. CODY HIGH
Renaissance goes OT to beat Cody 75 - 73 (OT)
Phillips' 3-pointer helps Renaissance stay in PSL West race.

DETROIT -- Renaissance junior Chene Phillips remembers his last big shot -- back in middle school.
Now, he has a better one to remember.
Phillips hit the game-winning 3-pointer with eight seconds left in overtime to lift Renaissance to a 75-73 victory over Cody in a Public School League West Division showdown Friday at Renaissance.
Renaissance (7-2, 3-1 West) trailed by one after Cody's Damon Johnson hit a lay-up with 23.8 seconds left. Senior point guard Delano Collins had the ball and set up a play. He drove to the basket, but Cody's defense collapsed and Collins found Phillips for the open shot.
"The play was designed for Delano," Renaissance coach Cameron Nichols said. "(Collins) could have been selfish and took the shot, but he showed his leadership. It was definitely the biggest shot of Chene's career."
Phillips scored 13 of his 19 points in the second half, including a key 3-pointer to give Renaissance a 56-55 lead with 2:42 left in regulation.
"I started feeling it down the stretch. When I got the ball, I knew I was going up with it and it was good," Phillips said of the winning shot.
Cody (6-3, 2-2) took its first lead, 15-14, on a 3-pointer by Richard Carter (27 points) to start the second quarter. Cody finished the half with two straight lay-ups by Angelo Lewis (13 points, 15 rebounds) for a 28-25 advantage.
Collins led Renaissance with 22 points. Daniel Sutherlin added 20 points, 16 rebounds and five blocks.
"Pressure doesn't affect (Delano); he plays above his years -- not like a 17-year-old," Nichols said. "I trust him with the ball. He put on a show today."
In the third quarter, Phillips helped Renaissance rally, with a three-point play at the 2:07 mark to regain the lead, 40-38. Carter's pair of free throws kept Cody ahead, 44-43, entering the fourth quarter.
But Collins helped Renaissance move ahead, with two free throws at the 2:19 mark for a 58-56 lead, then a lay-up to extend the lead to four. Cody erased the deficit and forced overtime on a lay-up by Brandon Foster with 28 seconds left in regulation, setting up the frantic extra period.
"When you play in the PSL West, it's always tough," Nichols said. "But Cody is a tough team to beat."
Demetrius Ford scored 12 points for Cody.
"We felt like we had it. We didn't think (Phillips) would make it," Cody coach Bryant Tipton said. "We wanted to contest Delano but the kid made a good shot.
"Having two (league) losses doesn't kill our chances, but it doesn't help."
